With gifts of livestock and training, Heifer projects help families improve their nutrition and generate income in sustainable ways. Udavum Karangal means “Helping Hands” in English. Located in Chennai, India, Udavum Karangal Orphanage not only helps discarded or abandoned children but also adults in the society. Established in 1983, the orphanage had a sole objective of serving people in distress who were orphaned or destitute. As of 2011, the center takes care of about 2000 individuals including abandoned babies, abused, discarded or orphaned children, mentally challenged, physically disabled and/or terminally ill people of various ages. Udavum Karangal does not receive any government funding or foreign grants. Their funds are raised through donations from philanthropic and public donations.
