Dr. Mesiwala implanted the ReActiv8 Neurostimulation System in a patient two weeks ago, becoming the first Neurosurgeon in the country to do so. This neuromuscular stimulator is implanted as bilateral electrodes into the multifidus muscle for muscular stimulation and connected to an implantable generator.

After the operation, Mesiwala commented that “ReActiv8 is a unique therapy designed to treat structural abnormalities that traditional surgery cannot address. This is not like other stimulators; it solely treats symptoms. It is restorative therapy for the treatment of multifidus muscle atrophy that physical therapy and other conventional methods have been unable to address.”

In addition to this neuromuscular stimulator, he regularly implants spinal cord stimulators and dorsal root ganglion stimulators for the treatment of patients with chronic/regional pain syndromes. 
This neurostimulator technology has been in existence for quite some time, and advancements in technology have made them a mainstay in the treatment of patients suffering from chronic pain.

Proper patient selection and experience ensure that the patients get optimal outcomes. Patients typically undergo a thorough history/physical, review of radiological findings to make sure that there are no anatomical differences that can be corrected with traditional surgery/pain management prior to consideration and a trial for implantation of stimulator systems in the outpatient setting.
